Project
Spatial design of the exhibition Fins de siècle at the McCord Museum
Year
1999
In collaboration with
Andrée Blais

Exhibition design for the McCord Museum, conceived and developed in collaboration with Andrée Blais. The exhibition draws a parallel between two fin-de-siècle day, the 19th and 20th centuries, experienced through the lives of female figures. Three themes are highlighted: social awareness and disparities, hope and knowledge, and crisis and social transformation.

The installation builds on the existing tripartite composition and symmetry of the exhibition space. Three large illuminated platforms, whose ends are defined by translucent vertical screens, create distinct zones for the expression of the exhibition’s three themes. The 19th century is represented through artifacts displayed on the platforms, while the 20th century is condensed onto screens at the end of each platform, where documentary videos portraying the daily lives of three contemporary young individuals are projected. The experience of history and time is not linear, but rather unfolds through superposition, juxtaposition, and sectional perception, shaped both by the visitor’s movement through space and by shifts in viewpoint.
